Baby formula, ranked by what it really costs
The can price lies — the per-ounce price tells the truth. We priced the largest standard powder can across the major brands at Walmart, Target, H-E-B, Costco, and Amazon, ranked by cost per ounce.

*Monthly estimate assumes about one 30 oz can a week (~130 oz powder/month) — adjust for your baby's appetite.
At about one 30 oz can a week, the cheapest verified option (Kirkland Signature ProCare, $0.76/oz) runs about $1188 a year versus $3363 for Earth's Best Organic ($2.16/oz) — a $2175 gap.

Specialty formulas (not ranked)
- Similac Alimentum — $2.93/oz (Amazon, price not directly verified). Hypoallergenic, for diagnosed cow's milk protein allergy — your pediatrician calls this one, not the price tag.
- Similac Alimentum — $3.18/oz (Target). Hypoallergenic, for diagnosed cow's milk protein allergy — your pediatrician calls this one, not the price tag.
These are medical-grade formulas for specific diagnoses. They're listed here so you can see the price, but ranking them against everyday formula would be misleading.
What the numbers don't show
- The store-brand gap is real: store brands run $0.73–$0.98/oz while the name-brand reference point (Similac Advance) is $1.40/oz. That's roughly a 45% savings — on the order of $700–$900 a year — for the same FDA-regulated nutrition.
- H-E-B coupon (expires Oct 13, 2026): H-E-B has a $5-off store-brand formula coupon with unlimited use, which would drop H-E-B Baby to about $0.82/oz while it lasts.
- Bigger isn't always cheaper: Earth's Best's 32 oz can ($2.16/oz) is a notably worse value than its 21 oz can ($1.65/oz). Always check the per-ounce math.
- Name changes: Gerber's line is now sold as "Good Start | Dr. Brown's Gentle Pro" (same formula, new branding after the brand sale).
- Kirkland was the cheapest verified option at $0.76/oz but was out of stock online at check time — warehouse availability may differ.
How we priced this
Every row is the largest standard powder container at the regular shelf price — not sale, not Subscribe & Save. Prices were checked on retailer sites in Oct 2026. Rows marked price not directly verified come from third-party listings or were blocked by the retailer's bot check; treat those as approximate. Ready-to-feed liquid formula isn't ranked here — different unit economics.
